I've never understood what people like about Nas so much. I should give ILLMATIC another try, I guess. You always do well at helping me appreciate stuff I hadn't before.

Illmatic is the culmination of early '90s NYC hip-hop. It's the best album that came from that time and place, and it marked the beginning of the East Coast's "hardcore" era, which Biggie, Jay-Z, and later Nas himself helped turn into the Shiny Suit era. But, since I think early '90s NYC hip-hop is almost as bad as late '90s NYC hip-hop (or current NYC hip-hop, for that matter), I'm not a fan of Illmatic, although it's kind of impressive anyway and has two songs that I love ("Memory Lane" and "Life's a Bitch").
