You may remember that, in 2006, the Three 6 Mafia won an Academy Award for their song "It's Hard Out Here for a Pimp," used effectively by Craig Brewer in Hustle & Flow. Half a year prior, the group had released one of their best and most successful albums, Most Known Unknown, which added a commercial polish to their classic sound without betraying its eerie intensity. One of the best collectives in hip-hop, the longtime Memphis favorites seemed on the verge of taking the rap industry by storm.
But, somehow, they managed to squander all their Oscar momentum. In mid 2006, they premiered another video from Most Known Unknown, but this version of "Side 2 Side," already one of the album's weaker songs, added an incongruous verse by Bow Wow, of all people. In 2007, the Mafia came out with a short-lived, reportedly awful TV show, "Adventures in Hollywood." Early in the same year, they released a new single, "Doe Boy Fresh," but no album followed.
It seems that we will finally see a new CD from them in June, though they've certainly waited too long: They fell out of the limelight a year ago. The new single from the upcoming album, Last 2 Walk, has the Miami Bass-esque title "Lolli Lolli (Pop that Body)," and I think it's the worst single I've ever heard from a good rap group. Good rappers make terrible songs all the time, but this one is really offensively awful, so utterly tacky and insipid that I had to mention it here. You sort of have to watch a few seconds of the video:
These guys actually once were hardcore rappers. So what did happen? Certainly they miss Lord Infamous and Crunchy Black; I have no idea who Young D and Superpower, the guest artists featured on this track, are. But Lord Infamous was gone for Most Known Unknown, too, and the absence of him and Crunchy Black cannot account for this cut-rate Usher imitation. It does not help that Lil Wayne has a similar song, "Lollipop," also idiotic but much catchier, on the charts.
In any case, I'll give Last 2 Walk a listen when it comes out, but things aren't looking good.
